General surgery
Dr.
Brown performs all general surgeries including spays, neuters,
de-claws, ear crops etc. Up to 90% of surgeries, elective and
non-elective, are performed with laser when appropriate. Our clinic is
pleased to be among the first veterinary practices in the area to offer
laser surgery specifically for pets. Laser Surgery is the "painless" surgery!
|
 |
Anesthesia The
Dog and Cat Clinic provides the most "up to date" anesthetic protocols
available in veterinary medicine. Most surgical procedures require
general anesthesia, characterized by a sleep-like state, muscle
relaxation and pain relief. Some minor surgeries can be done by
sedation (induced drowsiness) and local anesthesia (like the kind you
get at the dentist).
There is a trained
technician monitoring your pet throughout his/her surgical procedure
and afterwards during the recovery phase. The anesthetics we use do not
make the animal "hung over" and with most procedures the animals go
home the same day!
|
 |
Pre-anesthetic Bloodwork
Bloodwork and tests prior to any surgery can reduce medical risk. This
lab work is performed prior to your pet undergoing general anesthesia.
It ensures that all the organs are functioning properly and your pet 's
organs can metabolize (process) then eliminate the anesthetic that they
are given. These tests can reveal any hidden health conditions that
could put your pet at risk for the surgery.

Orthopedic surgery Orthopedic
surgery is performed at our hospital. Routine fracture repair, cruciate
ligament repair, dislocations and any others as needed

Laser surgery
Laser technology, an alternative to traditional surgery (using a
scalpel) is an exciting new option for safer and less painful surgery.
It has been used successfully on humans for over 30 years. Laser energy
seals nerve endings as it moves through tissue. Your pet feels less
pain post-operatively. The laser seals small blood vessels during
surgery, which allows the doctor to perform surgeries with
extraordinary precision. This also speeds some procedures, reducing the
need for anesthesia.
Laser energy does not crush, tear or bruise because only a beam of intense light contacts the tissue.
What does this mean for my pet? It means reduced risk of infection and
quicker return to normal activities.
What
types of procedures can a laser perform? Laser surgery is used to
perform all routine spays, neuters, and declaws. It can correct many
common conditions such as cysts, tumors, warts, and infections that may
occur around the eyes, ears, in the mouth, and anywhere on the skin, as
well as specialized internal procedures.

Dental cleanings/extractions & Preventative Oral (home) Care
Animals cannot brush their teeth themselves; therefore they they can
accumulate a lot of plaque and tartar especially after 1 year of age.
And since they will not lay there quietly and open their mouths in a
dental chair like we do, it is necessary to give animals "light"
anesthesia to perform ultrasonic scaling and polishing. This is not
general or deep anesthesia. A fluoride treatment is also applied after
the cleaning. Pet owners should be aware of the dangers involved in
neglecting this important area of their pet's health. Certain heart,
liver and kidney diseases can be associated with the bacteria that
reside under the plaque, tarter and gum line in your pet's mouth. It
gets into the bloodstream and takes up housekeeping in these major
organs (causes vegetative endocarditis of the heart for example). Local
problems in the mouth result and painful dental problems arise like
periodontal disease (gum infections) and eventually loose and decayed
teeth. With yearly dental cleanings and routine homecare, these
problems can be prevented.

On-site laboratory
We
are able to run "in house" lab work. Results are obtained in 12 – 20
minutes. We perform blood chemistry, hematology, electrolytes, thyroid,
heartworm tests, parasite checks, felv/fiv combo tests, and parvo
tests. This convenience allows pre-anesthetic blood work to be done the
morning of your pet's surgery within 15 minutes and immediate results
on sick or injured animals without the wait of outside (24 hour) labs.

 |
Pharmacy
Our clinic provides 95% of drugs needed for your pet's preventative
health and for treating and managing disease related illnesses. Online
pharmacies are very popular but many products are counterfeit and
mislabeled. Many online pharmacies purchase these drugs in Europe and
Australia, which have different dosages and concentrations than in the
U.S. So, animals can be over or under dosed (not given the proper
dosage).
|
 |
Preventive Health Care
Because pets age so rapidly, major health changes can occur in a short
amount of time, therefore early detection is the key. The risk of
heartworms, diabetes, arthritis, obesity, and other serious conditions
may be prevented with twice a year wellness exams. We believe in
disease prevention so that your pet can live longer and healthier lives.

 |
Reproduction counseling
We offer advice on breeding and when to breed your female dog. We offer
canine artificial insemination. This is usually performed on the 9th,
11th, and13th day of the heat cycle. The heat cycle will last for 3
weeks and the dog will have a heat cycle twice a year. We ask that the
male and female dog be at the clinic during the day to have this
procedure done. The female dog can be examined at 3 weeks after the
procedure to see if she is pregnant. It takes 9 weeks or 63 days for a
dog to have puppies!

 |
Nutrition counseling We
offer Hill's Science Diet for all stages of your pets' life. In
addition to the many "maintenance" foods, the veterinarian may
prescribe "Hill's Prescription Diet" designed to treat different
diseases such as, heart disease, kidney disease, obesity, and others.
|
 |
Behavioral counseling
During
your first visit, our veterinarian staff will discuss behavioral issues
with the client. There are puppy and kitten exercises that enable the
owner to teach the animal at home about proper restraint techniques.
The animal will learn to be more submissive, docile and in return a
more trainable pet. Better-behaved pets make happier owners.
|
 |
House calls
Our Veterinarian will make house calls for special circumstances
(elderly persons, euthanasia etc.) Our staff also arranges some pick
up/delivery for homebound clients to help service their animal's health
care needs.

Vaccinations
Our Clinic makes absolutely sure you are made aware of vaccinations
needed by mail (postcard reminders) and personal phone calls. We will
start your puppy or kitten on a schedule at your first visit and they
will be vaccinated for the following:
Puppies need the following sets of vaccinations at 6, 9, 12, and 15 weeks of age;
| Distemper: |
The
virus affects the respiratory, digestive, and nervous system. This is a
deadly disease that is very contagious and dogs must be vaccinated
yearly. There is no ‘cure' for this virus.
|
| Hepatistis: |
This liver disease is caused by a virus that can be serious and difficult to treat.
|
| Leptospirosis: |
A
disease caused by a family of bacteria that causes a potentially fatal
kidney disease. It is more commonly seen now as there is a reoccurrence
of this disease.
|
| Parvovirus: |
This
serious viral infection that attacks the lining of the intestinal tract
causes bloody diarrhea and vomiting. It is a highly contagious and
serious disease most commonly seen in puppies, especially the
Rottweiler and Pitbull breeds. It requires intensive hospitalization
and the prognosis many times poor.
|
| Coronavirus: |
This is a viral disease that is very similar to Parvovirus but not as severe.
|
| Bordetella: |
This
disease is commonly known as ‘kennel cough'. One of many microbes that
cause bronchitis and bronchopneumonia. It is also contagious and is
common in boarding kennels.
|
| Rabies: |
This
viral disease is epidemic in many parts of North America and can infect
all mammals, including people. The saliva of an infected animal from a
bite transmits rabies Rabies is almost always fatal in unvaccinated
animals.
|
Kittens need the following sets of vaccinations at 8, 11, 14 and 17 weeks of age;
| RCP/Pneumonitis: |
Also
known as feline distemper, this virus causes vomiting and diarrhea, and
is often fatal. This group also causes respiratory infections with
cold-like symptoms that are highly contagious.
|
| Feline Leukemia*: |
(FELV)
This deadly virus is transmitted among cats only. It inhibits the
immune system and causes a complex of debilitating diseases that
includes various types of cancers.
|
| Feline Immunodeficiency Virus*: |
(FIV)
Also known as Feline Aids, this fatal virus impacts the immune system.
It is contagious among cats and is not transmitted to other species.
|
| Feline Infectious Peritonitis: |
(FIP) This lethal virus typically affects young cats. Signs include progressive wasting, fever, loss of appetite and diarrhea.
|
| Rabies: |
This
viral disease is epidemic in many parts of North America and can infect
all mammals, including people. The saliva of an infected animal
transmits rabies.
|
* A blood test is recommended prior to vaccinations, to rule out these sometimes silent, deadly diseases.
Adult dogs and cats are given the above vaccinations yearly and dogs
are given boosters every 6 months for Parvovirus and Bordetella. Dogs
are tested yearly for heartworms and heartworm preventative medication
is recommended for both dogs and cats.
